Three found dead in Fukuoka apartment

Three people were found dead in a second-floor condominium unit in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, on Thursday, police said. Investigators found two bodies almost reduced to skeletons on futons in different rooms and the third body — that of a woman — in the kitchen, after a condo resident alerted the police that a female resident had been missing for two to three months and an odor was coming from her unit.

The two bodies were so decomposed that their age and sex were unidentifiable, police said, adding that autopsies will be performed Friday. The door was locked when the police arrived and there were no traces of the condo having been burgled, they said.

The three bodies found in a condominium in Kitakyushu on Thursday may have been left there unburied for religious reasons, as the sound of drums and chanting was frequently heard coming from the apartment, the Fukuoka prefectural police said Friday.

Forensic analysis showed that the cause of the death of a woman whose body was found dehydrated was starvation, and that she had died about a month earlier. The two other severely decomposed bodies belonged to a man and a woman who died at least few months before the woman who starved. The body of the starved woman was lying on a futon in the kitchen-living room, while the two other bodies were found in almost a skeletal state inside futons in separate rooms.
